I have a mid-2010 iMac that has a Firewire 800 and USB 2.0 ports (and no Thunderbolt port--though apparently I bought an iMac right before they started including them). A lot of the external hard drives I'm buying now have USB 3.0 ports, but no Firewire ports. Probably a bad idea to leave connected for an extended period, and I suspect it could drain a laptop battery very quickly if it's not connected to the charger.
